Why Journalism is Important in Tough Times

Courtesy of CNPA, this document argues forcefully that even in tough financial times, journalism programs "pay off big" and should be maintained at all costs.

Education Code

This document provides you with the specific regulatory wording governing scholastic publications in California, followed by a discussion of the relevance these regulations retain despite the Supreme Court decision.

Historical Outline of Journalism

This outline, produced by James Shuman and Ed Galdrikian of JEANC, outlines the development of journalism from Colonial times up to Desktop Publishing.

The Scholastic Journalism Gazette

A mock newspaper, also produced by James Shuman, is in PDF printable format and includes articles about important legal and historical milestones in the development of journalism.

Model Publications Code

This document provides you with a sample Publications Code written specifically to conform with California regulations, one of which is that every school district in the state shall have such a document. With a minimum amount of rewriting, you can submit this document to your own local board for adoption.

The Texas Standards for Journalism:

Texas Educational Standards for Journalism as found in Chapter 110 TEKS for English Language Arts and Reading Subchapter C. High School

Student Press Law Center

Located in Washington, DC, the SPLC is the best-known scholastic journalism advocate in the nation and has been providing free legal advice and information as well as low-cost educational materials for student journalists on a wide variety of legal topics since 1974. The SPLC handles hundreds of phone calls each week and gives advice on several thousand cases each year.

The Freedom Forum

The Freedom Forum is well-known for its support of scholastic journalism programs, instructors, and students. A variety of publications, programs, seminars and workshops are offered, and the range of on-line material is quite informative.

Student Press Rights

Students need to recognize that for every right they claim, they must accept a responsibility. This brief document spells out the relationship of those two aspects of journaalistic expression quite clearly.
